Why does Las Vegas have a flood control system since it NEVER rains?

It does occasionally rain. The real problem is that the ground is as hard as concrete from the dessert heat beating down day after day. (Just try to get a shovel in the ground). When the infrequent rain burst comes, look out. The water doesn't get absorbed and off it goes looking for trouble.Why does Las Vegas have a flood control system since it NEVER rains?
We don't get much rain in Las Vegas, but the rain we do get doesn't soak into our hard ground, or caliche. We also get runoff from the mountains when it rains up there. When you put all that water together, a flood can come up really fast. Every year in Monsoon Season (July and August) people get their cars stuck in the flooded streets.Why does Las Vegas have a flood control system since it NEVER rains?
it's funny you say that I have only been to vegas twice and both times I went it rained! Casinos cost a lot of money and most of them have their front doors wide open 24/7 no casino owner wants to see one million dollars worth of slot machines short circut because of the rain!

If you get one good rain every ten to twenty years, do you plan to let everything get destroyed and rebuild, or do you engineer a way to prevent it from being a problem? A flood plain is a flood plain, regardless of how often it floods.
If it never rained, it would be silly. But it sometimes rains, and since this is infrequent, natural drainage is not well developed and flash floods can occur.
They have a monsoon season that can bring rain. Also, it does rain it just doesn't happen often and when it does, it can cause flash flooding. In fact, there's a chance for thunderstorms today there.
because they get monsoons there, as well as phoenix. the ground is not prepared for a lot of rain, so it doesnt take the water in, so it causes floods, quickly.
They sometimes get very powerful thunderstorms.
